Prepare for the worst scenario

TC2 can advise you on how to prepare for a disaster event, thus enabling business continuity and securing operational stability.

In the past weeks, earthquakes happened in various European countries: Croatia, Italy and Greece. It is fascinating how powerful nature is, and we must be prepared for more devastating disasters and for minimizing their impact.  What we can advise on at TC2 is how to prepare for such a disaster event, thus enabling business continuity and securing operational stability.

A lot of companies we talk to have their entire IT systems hosted on premise, often distributed to multiple datacenters just a few hundred kilometers away from each other, providing high availability. For a serious earthquake, that can mean all our datacenters having an outage at the same time. You need to consider to place your disaster site much further away, but definitely on a different tectonic plate.

Another common issue is when there is no clear classification which of our systems are critical and how quickly we need them back online in case of a disaster – talking about Recovery Time and Point objectives (RTO and RPO), meaning how much data loss and availability loss you are willing to take in case of a disaster event. Saying that everything has to be up and running all the time and cannot lose any data is rarely a good answer, as on the other side, it has a cost uplift effect.

Let’s take a look at our options at AWS, how we can provide disaster recovery depending on the expected RTO and RPO target values.
