Vodafone
Based on the strategic guidelines of Vodafone group, the Hungarian subsidiary of Vodafone decided to run at least 40% of its IT workloads in the cloud by 2020.
The challenge
To achieve this, it had to become a well-functioning, multi-cloud compatible, hybrid-enabled IT organization. For this transformation process, they called on TC2 as a long-term strategic partner.
The solution
To implement processes and integrations between on-premise IT and AWS systems, commonly formulated architecture patterns and day-to-day activities had to come together in a cloud strategy and management program. The successful development and migration of multiple systems in AWS creates a healthy balance in IT processes. Each new application can be placed on the most appropriate platform with the help of a governance process, considering its strengths. In addition to the ticketing and billing system, a new-generation IoT application proof of concept for automatic car parking was implemented on the AWS backend system, increasing the list of innovative applications built on AWS native technologies.
TC2 provided the AWS expertise for establishing the foundational IT functions (Landing zone), performing the systems migrations, and ongoing operations and support for the AWS workloads. For production AWS workloads, TC2 continuously reviewed and optimized the AWS solution, services used, performance, cost, security and operational aspects of the business applications, to ensure it is always performing optimally.
AWS solution
In terms of AWS implementation, even though the AWS organization feature and account management was provided by Vodafone Group, Vodafone Hungary chose to build a shared services AWS account with main entry to other accounts to navigate through AWS workloads and to centralize authentication. Workload solutions deployed to Vodafone HU AWS accounts consisted of managed DNS, Loadbalancing, caching and RDBMS, with some pilot projects on more innovative grounds like AWS IoT core, Lambda and K8s. For security and compliance of the environments, AWS provided tools guaranteed the baseline hardening, such as AWS config, Access analyzer and Guardduty, further extended on application-level security with other 3rd party AWS technology partners provided tooling.
Outcomes and success metrics
The new applications were implemented and transitioned to production in very short time frames, while providing an agile mindset and flexibility to meet business needs. Remediations of any compliance or security issues (AWS config based, Systems manager, patch manager based or 3rd party vulnerability scanning sources) went down from months to weeks, using TC2 dedicated team of professionals to tackle these issues.
